News Team

Editor (Temporary)

LOCATION: Remote within the US

Hours: 40 hrs. a week, 5 days a week, 10-6pm ET
Contract Duration: Beginning April 2024 through June 2024 (Temporary, full-time assignment)
Pay Rate: $45-$50/hr.

We are looking for an experienced Editor to fill in during staff leave from April to June 2024. The editor will be expected to structure, fact check, and polish Daily Kos staff stories. The ideal candidate is obsessive about the details and has strong feelings about the Oxford comma.

The position may require weekend work.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit Daily Kos staff and freelance stories for tone, structure, style, grammar, syntax, and punctuation, working with writers on rewrites as needed to ensure all content reflects Daily Kos’ editorial mission and complies with the Code of Ethics.
  • Ensure that all stories conform to editorial guidelines and are written in a clear, concise, and engaging style.
  • Fact-check articles to ensure accuracy and integrity of information.
  • Format edited content in the Daily Kos CMS.
  • Work with writers to improve and strengthen their craft.
  • Identify and prevent duplicate content and plagiarism.
  • Work with other editors to craft headlines and select images.
  • Prepare outside content, including cartoons and AP wire stories, to be republished at Daily Kos.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Experience:

  • 4+ years of editing and/or copy editing experience in a print and/or digital newsroom or similar setting.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Fluency in AP style and other editorial guidelines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Impeccable attention to detail.
  • Basic knowledge of U.S. progressive politics and news.
  • Comfortable with a virtual working environment.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML, SEO, and social media.
  • Be tech and internet savvy (we use Google Docs, Slack, Dropbox, Asana, and lots of other tools that make work life easier).

News Team

Staff Reporter

Location: Remote within the US

The Staff Reporter works with the Newsroom team, as part of the Content Division, writing about politics through an unapologetically progressive lens to provide readers with information and resources to fight for democracy, win elections, and impact government.

The position may require weekend work.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and pitch multiple stories a day, from quick, short pieces with unique angles on political news of the day as well as longer originally reported stories and analysis
  • Build and maintain relationships with leaders and staff in elected officials’ offices, campaigns, and advocacy organizations
  • Contribute to coverage of breaking news and live events, such as election nights and presidential debates
  • Help the newsroom track news developments in real time and alert editors to breaking news
  • Use video-clipping software such as TVEyes to incorporate video into stories as appropriate
  • Work to build a personal brand through an active social media presence
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Experience:

  • Must have a minimum of 3+ years of original reporting experience at a digital news outlet, preferably in advocacy journalism, including:
  • Reaching out to sources;
  • Conducting interviews;
  • A base of existing sources and the skills to grow it;
  • A portfolio of work that demonstrates original and enterprise reporting
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Knowledge of digital best practices, including SEO, headline writing, and metrics

Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing skills, with the ability to write clean copy that does not require substantial re-writing
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Ability to break down complex policies and processes for a general audience
  • Deep understanding of progressive and electoral politics
  • Excellent news judgment
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Comfortable with a virtual working environment

Salary Range: $77,250.00 - $87,550.00

News Team

Managing Editor

Location: Remote within the US

The Managing Editor oversees the day-to-day operations of the Newsroom—assigning, editing, and scheduling stories; supervising staff writers; and coordinating the publication of content from other teams in the Content Division. The Managing Editor works closely with the head of the Content Division to make data-driven decisions and execute the editorial strategy, shaping narratives and guiding political analysis. The Managing Editor also oversees the editorial calendar and publishing schedule and ensures that we have sufficient coverage, including for special events.

This position reports to the head of the Content Division.

The position may require weekend work.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage Newsroom staff, contractors, and freelancers, including hiring, onboarding, goal-setting, regular 1:1s, performance management, assigning tasks, coordinating schedules, approving time-off requests, holding direct reports accountable for job performance, and issuing disciplinary action as needed
  • Implement and maintain Newsroom policies and procedures
  • Shape and oversee the goals and growth of the Newsroom team
  • Serve on committees as appropriate
  • Direct daily news coverage by assigning and approving stories that reflect Daily Kos’ editorial mission and comply with the Code of Ethics
  • Help writers to develop unique angles on major news of the day as well as longer originally reported and enterprise stories
  • Direct coverage of live events, such as election nights and presidential debates, as well as breaking news on nights and weekends as needed
  • Lead the Newsroom in tracking news developments in real time and alert the team to breaking news
  • Collaborate with leadership in the Content Division on content strategy
  • Oversee the front page publishing schedule
  • Oversee headline workshopping and testing and image selection
  • Contribute to ongoing improvement of editorial systems, processes, and best practices
  • Monitor analytics to continuously assess content performance to help inform editorial decision-making
  • Oversee the integration of AP wire stories and other third-party content into the publishing schedule
  • Work with the Director of Community to promote community, freelance, and partner content to the front page
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Experience:

  • 10+ years in digital media, preferably in advocacy journalism
  • 5+ years in an editorial management role
  • Strong leadership skills as demonstrated through previous management or mentorship experience
  • A successful track record of building and managing teams with varying levels of experience
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, motivate, and work effectively with writers and editors of varying skills and experience
  • Proven journalism skills, including reporting and editing
  • Deep knowledge of progressive and Democratic politics
  • An understanding of, and commitment to, advocacy journalism
  • Familiarity with SEO, content optimization, and social media distribution
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Knowledge of analytics tools such as Chartbeat and Google Analytics
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Commitment to diversity in sourcing topics and approaches
  • Comfortable with a virtual working environment

Salary Range: $125,000 - $145,000
