The vote is over and the results are in. I'm afraid Ireland will not be going forward to the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2015. The second Eurovision heat was on Thursday and when the votes were tallied Ireland was not one of the 10 nations to go forward to the Eurovision final, which will be on Saturday.
The vote on the referendum to allow Same Sex Marriage in Ireland will however be today - Friday. Polling stations close at 10pm Irish time (sometime in the afternoon in the USA).
The main Irish TV station is at rte.ie and you should be able to get updates there.
The wikipedia article on the referendum gives a pretty good introduction.
Points to note.
Every political party in parliament has endorsed a yes vote. Only one member of parliament spoke against the the proposal.
The Church of Ireland (Episcopalian sort of) are neither for nor against. The Catholic church, Presbyterian Church, Methodists and the Council of Imams urged people to vote No.
The wikipedia articles list all the other organisations who supported or opposed the change. Of note for Americans is probably that the Policemens union came out for a Yes vote.
Lots of US companies have their US EU headquarters in Ireland and these all seem to have come out for the Yes side.
The Prime Minister made a visit to a gay bar with a group of other politicians from his party's LGBT group and posed for pictures. This is the Fine Gael party. The party that, in the 1930's, recruited volunteers to go fight with Franco and the Fascists (Yes. Real Fascists. That's what they called themselves) in the Spanish Civil war. Guess things have changed.
Opinion polls have varied a lot but have generally shown the Yes side with 60% to 70% support with the No side 20% to 25%. There is some worry that there is a 'shy No' effect i.e. that No voters are ashamed to admit their opinion to pollsters and that the final result will be a bigger No vote than the polls show.
If you have friends or family in Ireland then this morning is your last chance to influence their vote. Time to give them a call.
